2010 NKHN Equine Drill Team Competition

Drill teams from 4 states came to the Alexandria Fairgrounds

on Saturday, May 22nd to compete in NKHN’s 1st Annual

Championship Drill Team Competition. Walking away with the

high point medals and trophy was the Young Guns Drill Team,

based in Boone County. The Young Guns bested 8 other teams

from Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, and Massachusetts!

Remarkable is the word to describe these young (and not so

young) riders on their equine athletes as they continually

amazed all in attendance with their beautifully executed

routines set to classical and pop music even including The

Magnificent Seven and Wizard of Oz soundtracks.

Intricate patterns and continually varying speeds and gaits

were the order of the day. Many observers continually remarked

how the teams made it look so easy and wondered aloud at

the work and dedication it took to achieve their skills.

Little did we know that carrying off this show would

necessitate a battle with the elements (pouring rain mere

hours before the show) and “mechanical battles” as well,

as one team survived a flat tire on one trailer and seized

wheel bearings on another along their 4+ hour (normal

conditions) drive to attend. Thanks too to the Alexandria

Fairgrounds staff who worked incredibly hard to make the

competition possible.

Last, but not least, everyone attending, including coaches

and riders, had a simply wonderful day and promised to not

only return next year, but to bring additional teams as well.

Local horse owners are taking action after a spike in horse neglect due to the downturn of the economy.

Last August, Animal Control officers removed a horse from a farm in Northern Kentucky after finding her and her colt suffering from lack of food and water.

"I would say within a few weeks, she was near death," said Jim Mayer with the Northern Kentucky Horse Network.

Jim Mayer has worked for months to bring the horses back to life. Read more...
